WHO WE ARE

Founded in 2015 by Benoît Schumann, Project Rescue Ocean is a non-governmental organization (NGO) with a clear mission: to raise awareness about environmental protection, with a special focus on preserving our oceans and seas through youth education. Our core values define us — we are apolitical, neutral, federative, supportive, loyal, and transparent. We believe that by working together, everyone can become a driving force for positive change.

Project Rescue Ocean is UNESCO-accredited, officially recognized as serving the public interest by the French government, and supported by the French Ministry of National Education. We proudly collaborate with impactful movements such as Youth for Climate and 1% for the Planet.

Today, our global network includes 47 hubs worldwide, over 2,000 active volunteers, more than 693 tons of waste collected, and 40 000+ children educated on environmental issues.

Benoît Schumann

Founder & President of Project Rescue Ocean

A former Paris firefighter and professional diver, he decided to take action against the pollution he witnessed daily on beaches and in the ocean. In 2015, he created a Facebook page to raise awareness among those around him. This marked the beginning of an international movement.Benoît believes that every gesture matters, that education leads to transformation.

Changing mindsets is already changing the world.

WHAT WE DO

Our mission is to preserve marine ecosystems driving lasting change for the planet through two principle modes of action worldwide:

Eco-citizen operations

In-the-field actions focused on collecting wild waste from our shorelines. We inspire and empower individuals to take action by organizing volunteer-based activities across the globe. We supply our own collection containers called Cleanup Boxes and ensure proper waste management processes.

Educational awareness

With the Rescue Ocean Academy (ROA), we train educators and provides in-class sessions educating the youth on protecting our environment through awareness and action. Our program is officially accredited by the French Ministry of Education. We believe that each educated child will grow into a more responsible adult.

“It's disheartening because you tell yourself there is so much pollution, and it keeps coming every day, depending on the tides and the backwash. And at the same time, it's encouraging: the more you see trash, the more you feel like picking it up.”
—Jean Dujardin, International French Actor - Beach-clean up, Valras-Plage, France
Jane Doe
"It’s for a great cause, you spend a good time and you directly see the impact of these depollution actions.”
